The Origin of Bubble Wrap
Bubble wrap, or cushioning plastic, was an accidental innovation that came about in 1957 through the efforts of two inventors, Al Fielding and Marc Chavannes, who were trying to create a new type of wallpaper by bonding two shower curtains together to form a unique texture. Although the result wasn’t initially satisfactory, they did not give up on their invention and continued to look for ways to use it. In 1959, their efforts paid off when the tech giant IBM chose to use their creation to protect the company’s products during transport. This marked the beginning of the use of ‘bubble wrap’ in the shipping industry.
Advantages of Bubble Wrap
- It can always be reused as long as it’s not damaged.
- Lightweight, which helps reduce costs when shipping large quantities of goods.
- Inexpensive.
- Versatile, applicable to various products of different shapes.
The Future of Bubble Wrap
Although bubble wrap is a great innovation, it does have some downsides. In today’s world, where people are increasingly concerned about the environment, many are seeking alternatives to reduce the amount of waste and pollution caused by discarded plastics. There are now cushioning materials made from biodegradable wool that decompose within 6 months or from algae extracts. These are efforts to produce effective materials without neglecting the environment. Although these ideas are still in the experimental phase, we can expect new innovations to replace current materials in the future.
