Let’s Get to Know Shipping Marks

    JUL 01, 2025

When it comes to international shipping, it’s essential to ensure that the process from the country of origin to the destination country is smooth, and that the goods are safe throughout the transport process. To prevent mistakes and ensure product safety, each package or container must have correct and complete Shipping Marks or markings and numbers. CPLINTER brings you useful information about Shipping Marks, what they are, and why they are important in the shipping process.

    What are Shipping Marks?

Shipping Marks are texts, symbols, or numbers displayed on each package or container to indicate that the product matches the shipping document with accurate and complete information. These marks help ensure that the shipping process is convenient, fast, and safe. They also make it easier for both the origin and destination parties to understand the shipment details. Shipping Marks are required to be included in all import/export documents, including the commercial invoice, packing list, and AWB or B/L. According to the Customs Act of 2017, Section 211, it is stated that "Any importer or exporter who does not have markings or numbers on the package or container, or who fails to include the markings or numbers on related documents, will be subject to a fine of up to 50,000 Baht."

    Guidelines for Shipping Marks

For general goods, the shipping marks and package numbers should match the actual contents. The following rules apply: -If the markings and numbers are in text form, they must be recorded as they appear. If the text exceeds 512 characters, it should be recorded only up to 512 characters. -If the markings and numbers are in a foreign language, such as Chinese, they should be marked as “PICTURE” instead. -If the markings and numbers are in the form of images, the word “PICTURE” should be used.

For exempted goods, Shipping Marks are not required, but the entry declaration should state "NO SHIPPING MARK" for items such as: -Personal items (clothing, books, shoes, etc.) -Goods with international privileges under various treaties -Unpackaged items (e.g., cars, tires, metal bars, newspaper rolls) -Liquids in large bottles wrapped in woven materials (e.g., acids) -Bulk goods (e.g., coal) -Single-package items -Items packaged in standard boxes (e.g., cartons, wooden crates) -Steel or fiber drums with specific sizes and weights (e.g., bottle caps, oils, paints) -Goods in paper bags or sacks (e.g., fertilizers, ammonia, wheat) -Goods in transparent boxes (e.g., engines)

Shipping Marks play a crucial role in international shipping. They ensure that goods are delivered properly and with accurate documentation. If a product is damaged or contains incorrect information, Shipping Marks can serve as a reference for claiming damages.
