Get to Know the Bill of Lading: An Important Document for Export-Import

    JUL 02, 2025

When shipping goods abroad or importing items from foreign countries, various documents and evidence are often required. One such crucial document is the Bill of Lading (ใบขนสินค้า), which exporters and importers must prepare and submit to customs officials when exporting or importing goods to/from each country. Today, CPLINTER has gathered useful information about the Bill of Lading to help everyone understand its significance.

What is a Bill of Lading?

A Bill of Lading is a document that provides detailed information about the goods being shipped. For example, it includes the type of goods, quantity, total weight, net weight, value of goods, and any other documents required by customs. Exporters must submit this document to customs officials when shipping goods out of the country (export), and importers must submit it when bringing goods into the country (import).

In today’s world, various technologies are applied to the export-import process to enhance convenience, speed, accuracy, reduce paperwork, minimize user errors, and reduce paper usage. For example, the data used for preparing the Bill of Lading can be transmitted through electronic systems (e-Customs), and taxes can be paid electronically. Customs inspections are also conducted with electronic systems, using X-ray scanning instead of manual checks for low-risk goods, and electronic systems are used to select which goods to inspect.

What Information Does the Bill of Lading Number Provide?

Each Bill of Lading must have a 14-digit number, and each digit indicates different aspects such as the type of Bill of Lading and the date of submission.

    Types of Bills of Lading

The Export Bill of Lading is a document defined by the Customs Department that exporters must submit when shipping goods abroad, regardless of the transportation method (air, land, or sea). There are four types:

    Import Bills of Lading

The Import Bill of Lading is a document defined by the Customs Department that importers must submit when bringing goods into the country. It is used for goods transported by various methods, including air, land, and sea. There are nine types:

Form GSK.99/1: For general imports of all goods that don’t require special forms.

Form GSK.102: For special imports, such as live animals or other specific items.

Form GSK.103: Request for temporary import before completing all customs procedures.
