    Sea Freight Shipping Methods

    JUL 01, 2025

Sea freight shipping is another widely used transportation method, ideal for heavy and large-sized goods or shipments that are not time-sensitive, as it generally takes longer than other forms of transport. To help you understand sea freight better, CPLINTER presents key information about different types of sea freight contracts.

    Sea Freight Shipping (Sea Freight)

Sea freight shipping is a method that allows for the transportation of large quantities of goods at a relatively low cost compared to other forms of shipping. This method is very popular in Thailand. There are two main types of sea freight shipping: Full Container Load (FCL) and Less-than-Container Load (LCL).

    Sea Freight Shipping Contracts

    1. LINER TERM

This is a contract for shipping goods on vessels that follow a regular schedule with established routes. It includes three types of vessels:

Conventional Vessel: A multipurpose cargo ship that loads goods into the hold of a large vessel, often used for bulk cargo, with routes that go from the departure port to the destination port.

Container Vessel: A ship that transports goods in containers, often operating on a network service or a round-the-world service. It typically uses large mother ships servicing major ports and feeder ships to secondary or destination ports, such as the ports of Bangkok and Laem Chabang.

Semi-container Vessel: A ship that combines features of both conventional and container vessels, where part of the ship holds bulk cargo and another part can accommodate containers. It generally follows routes from one port to another.

    2. CHARTER TERM

This involves hiring a ship for specific transport tasks, where there is no fixed schedule or regular route. It includes four types of charters:

Voyage Charter: A one-time charter to ship goods between two ports. The owner of the ship bears the responsibility for the voyage costs, according to the charter agreement.

Time Charter: A lease where the ship is rented for a specified period. The charterer has the right to use the ship during this period, while the shipowner must ensure that the ship is operational. The charterer is responsible for the freight costs.

Bareboat Charter: A long-term charter where only the ship is rented, excluding the crew. The charterer is fully responsible for the operation and maintenance of the ship.

Hybrid Charter: A combination of different charter types, such as a mix of one-time voyages and time-based charters.

Sea freight shipping is widely preferred due to its capacity to transport large quantities of goods at a relatively low cost. There are various shipping methods and types of contracts available, allowing businesses to choose the most suitable one for their needs.
