How Shipping Weight for International Shipments Differs

    JUL 02, 2025

When shipping goods internationally, the weight of the items is an important factor. Many people often have questions regarding how to calculate the weight of goods for shipping fees when sending items abroad. Today, CPL brings you information on the different types of weight used in calculating shipping costs for various goods.

Types of Weight in International Shipments:

Actual Weight: This is the weight that can be measured using a scale, usually in kilograms (kg).

Dimensional Weight: This weight is calculated based on the size of the package. The dimensions of the item are measured and then calculated using the formula: Width x Length x Height in centimeters (cm) / 6,000.

Gross Weight: This is the total weight of the goods, which includes the weight of the packaging. It is essentially the same as the actual weight.

Net Weight: This is the weight of the goods alone, excluding the packaging.

Tare Weight: The weight of the empty container, without the goods inside.

Chargeable Weight: To calculate shipping costs for international shipments

The "Chargeable Weight" method is commonly used. This involves comparing the actual weight and the dimensional weight, and using the greater of the two as the basis for the shipping cost calculation. This applies to both air and truck transport. Formula for Calculation: If the actual weight is greater than the dimensional weight, the shipping cost is calculated as: Actual Weight x Shipping Rate (per kilogram) = Shipping Fee.

If the dimensional weight is greater than the actual weight, the shipping cost is calculated as: [(Width x Length x Height in cm) ÷ 5,000] x Shipping Rate (per kilogram) = Shipping Fee.

Example of Shipping Fee Calculation Using Chargeable Weight:

    For example, a product weighs 13 kg and has dimensions of 40 * 40 * 40 cm. The shipping fee is 500 THB per kilogram. Compare actual weight with dimensional weight: 13 kg vs. (40 * 40 * 40) / 5,000 = 12.8 kg.

The actual weight is greater, so we calculate the shipping fee using the actual weight: 13 kg x 500 THB = 6,500 THB.

In conclusion, the weight used for international shipments comes in different forms, and shipping fees must be calculated based on a comparison of the actual weight and the dimensional weight. The higher value is used for the calculation. CPL provides international shipping services, both export and import, with reliable calculation methods.
